Wichita is the undisputed aviation capital of the world, home to major aircraft and aerospace employers that include Learjet, Cessna, Hawker Beechcraft, Airbus, Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems.
If all the airplanes flown by the airlines, the military, businesses and individuals had a sticker saying where they were built, it probably would say “Made in Wichita.”
Some 97 years after Clyde Cessna crafted his first Kansas plane, the manufacturing company that bears his name riveted the aviation world with news it would build its boldest business jet ever in Wichita.
Air Capital of the World isn't just a ceremonial title for Wichita. The aviation industry employs more than 40,000 people throughout Kansas, and more than 140,000 additional jobs are supported directly or indirectly by the aviation industry.
No matter where you are in the United States or around the world, there is a good chance the airplanes you see flying overhead were made in Wichita, the home of famous aviation names such as Cessna, Hawker Beechcraft and Bombardier Learjet.
You'd expect a city of Wichita's stature in the aviation industry to have plenty of aircraft manufacturing and service capacity, but few can imagine the size of Cessna's Citation Service Center, a 477,000-square-foot behemoth that can fit 100 of these slick business jets inside it.
