Charlotte Climbs 15 Spots: On Numbers, which analyses 18 statistical indicators to provide a snapshot of conditions in the 102 major U.S. metropolitan areas with populations above 500,000, ranked Charlotte No. 47 in the nation for March 2013. Charlotte was No. 62 in the February 2013 ratings. Among the factors in the analysis are private-sector job growth, unemployment, earnings, housing-price appreciation, and construction and retail activity.

Airport Adds Chicago Flights: Southwest Airlines has begun daily nonstop flights between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Chicago's Midway Airport. The new Charlotte-Midway route is part of Southwest's takeover in April 2013 of all services previously operated by AirTran at Charlotte Douglas International.

Toy Manufacturer Chooses Charlotte: Germany-based toy manufacturer Schleich North America Inc. is relocating its North American headquarters from Canada to north Charlotte. Schleich will employ 60 full-time workers at its headquarters and distribution center within Twin Lakes Business Park off U.S. 21. The company is the largest toy manufacturer in Germany.

Harris Teeter Ranked Charlotte's No. 1 Grocer: Harris Teeter has surpassed Walmart to assume top spot as the No. 1 grocer in the Charlotte region, according to data released in early April 2013 by real estate analysis firm Karnes. A store swap with Lowes Foods in July 2012 netted Harris Teeter eight new Charlotte-area locations and boosted the company’s market share, resulting in its position as the region’s leading grocer by sales. Food Lion is in the No. 3 spot.
