Investment and Job Creation: GM Picks GA for Innovation Center

Major investments by automakers and suppliers tops the week’s job creation and investment news:

In Georgia, General Motors will open an IT Innovation Center in Roswell creating 1,000 high-tech jobs and investing $26 million. GM will purchase a 228,000-square-foot former UPS facility  in Roswell for the Innovation Center, the third of four such centers it is opening in the United States to strengthen its internal innovation capabilities as part of the company’s transformation to improve performance, reduce the cost of on-going operations and increase its delivery of innovation.

In Ohio, Honda of America will invest $23 million to upgrade its Marysville auto plant and add production of its new two-motor Accord Hybrid Sedan, with plans to hire approximately 50 additional workers. In the last three years, Honda has announced investments at its Ohio manufacturing facilities exceeding $800 million.

In Tennessee, Akebono Brake Corp.  Ltd. plans an $82 million expansion at its operations in Clarksville. The company is a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Akebono Brake Industry Co., a global provider of advanced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and braking solutions for automotive industry. The Clarksville expansion will add 94 jobs to the community.

In South Carolina, Bericap North America will expand its existing manufacturing facility in Cherokee County by 90,000 square feet. The company is a maker of plastic closures for the beverage, food, motor oil and agricultural industries. The $29 million investment is expected to generate 50 new jobs over the next five years.

In Kansas, E.C. Manufacturing, an advanced manufacturing startup, will open its operations in Shawnee. The company is expected to create 252 new jobs over the next three years and make an estimated capital investment of more than $6 million. The company will produce advanced, small electrical components. E.C. Manufacturing is affiliated with Heatron, a Leavenworth based company specializing in thermal management and heating element design and solutions, as well as LED Integration.
